Driving Instructor Car of the Year

ADIs expect a lot of their cars. As well as being ideal learning environments for their students, a driving instructor's car must often double as a practical everyday drive.

Potential winners of the 'Best Driving Instructor Car' award will need to be reliable, safe, easy to drive, affordable to run and easy to live with.

Reliability will be assessed using data from Warranty Direct, sponsor of the FirstCar Awards. Safety will be judged using Euro NCAP results, as well as the availability of high-tech driver aids such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB). A car's fuel economy and insurance group will be considered when assessing running costs. Intelligent Instructor's motoring editor, Richard Dredge, will score cars for driving comfort, ease of use and practicality. Any specific packages aimed at ADIs will be rated by Intelligent Instructor's editor, Paul Caddick.

In-Car Product of the Year

We're looking for ingenious in-car products which help young drivers stay safe or encourage better driving.

The product could be high-tech, or simple but ingenious. From dash cams to glovebox first aid kits, from sat navs to phone-blocking wallets, any product which contributes to young driver safety could be considered for FirstCar's 'Best In-Car Product' award.

Best Safety Technology
Sponsored by ingenie

This award is for original equipment road safety technology. We're looking for technical systems and driver aids which significantly advance new car safety in the kind of vehicles which learners and newly qualified drivers are most likely to drive.

Potential award winners might include autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems, post-collision braking, driver fatigue alerts, and restricted driving modes for young drivers.

Manufacturers can enter specific technologies for consideration through the form below. FirstCar may also choose to nominate particular technologies for an award.

Green Car of the Year

Expert judges from FirstCar and Intelligent Instructor will choose the FirstCar 'Best Green Car'.

To be in with a chance of winning this award, a car will need excellent fuel economy and low carbon dioxide emissions. Our judges will also consider the car's NOx and particulate emissions.

Any 'Best Green Car' for young drivers will need to be affordable to buy and run as well as having strong environmental credentials.

Safe Car of the Year
Sponsored by Driving Test Success

The parents of any young driver will want to make sure they are driving the safest possible car.

To be a contender for this award, a car will need an excellent standard of safety equipment, strong all-round visibility, controls which are easy to use without distraction, and superb results in independent crash testing.

Used Car of the Year
Sponsored by Warranty Direct

Most first cars are used cars. To win the FirstCar 'Used Car of the Year' title, a car will need to be reliable, safe, and affordable to buy and run.

Reliability will be assessed with the help of the FirstCar Award's sponsor, Warranty Direct. Through its Reliability Index, Warranty Direct can show which cars go wrong most often and how much they cost to repair.

Safety will be rated through Euro NCAP results and the standard fitment of important safety features. Each car will also be scored on value for money and running costs, such as fuel economy and insurance. Ease of driving will also contribute to the car's overall score.

The winning car will be a great all-round buy, combining value, dependability and safety.

Car of the Year
Sponsored by Warranty Direct

The most prestigious of all the prizes at the inaugural FirstCar Award, the FirstCar 'Car of the Year' will be the ideal new car for young drivers.

To be in with a chance of winning, any new car will need to offer the complete package. We're looking for a car that's safe, reliable, affordable, easy to drive and packed with technology.

Reliability will be rated using hard data from our sponsors, Warranty Direct. Safety will also be a key consideration, assessed through Euro NCAP test results and whether or not a car is fitted with an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system.

We're looking for a small car with big car features, such as smartphone connectivity. It should also be easy to drive, have low insurance premiums and rock-bottom fuel costs.

We know that young drivers like to make a new car their own, so the greater the scope for personalisation the better.

The winner will be a car young drivers can be proud of, which helps them stay safe, and keeps their running costs low.
